1914. He joined the Territorials on 5/09/1914 and was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, London Regiment, the Queens, 680690. His regimental number was 2083. His character was stated as Very Good, vision was good, height 5ft 8 &1/2in.. Next of kin given, in 1914, as father, Stephen Lyons of 6, White Lion Court. He served almost 4 years in France, as a private, from March 1915 to February 1919. He was awarded the 1914/1915 Star, the British War medal and the Victory Medal. He was given 7 days punishment in 1916 for overstaying his leave by 1 day. Some of his papers, to be found on Ancestry, are water damaged, but even so, there does not seem to be a document that states when he received leave [ to confirm he came home for the marriage found below!]. http://www.queensroyalsurreys.org.uk/war_diaries/war_diaries_home.html gives the War Diary of his regiment. . . . .

1917. Stephen Bernard Lyons, soldier, of 6 White Lion Court, married Charlotte Turpin, bottler, 1/6/1917 in St.Mary Magdalen C of E Bermondsey. Thus he has lapsed from catholicism! Marriage was by license, presumably due to fact that he only had a few days leave from France. His father, Stephen Lyons, died 21 days later!. Cannot find Charlotte in 1901C, but she was probably born Camberwell Dec 1894.

1919 His address was 73 Union Road, Newington Causeway, but he had moved from there by July 1922 when his 1914/5 Star medal was sent. But still living St Olaves until 1930 at least.

Have searched for all these on Genes Reunited & Ancestry trees in Jan2009: none. A shame, since some of these might still be alive today.'but, 2017, am now in contact with Diane Lyons, daughter of James Leon Lyons 1930, still alive

My dad, James, 1930, did say that his dad, Bernard Stephen 1894, worked in the leather industry - a tannery. I know my dad was a lighterman in the docks.I do remember two of my uncles 'running bets' in Bermondsey.I never realised that it was illegal until I saw them being chased by the police! My nan, Charlotte, lived just off Spa road for many years and then moved to Drummond Road also in Bermondsey.I remember the terrible smell of the gelatine factory that was opposite my nan's flat.

Patrick , 1923, seemingly had 2 children: Josephine and Stephen. Have asked Diane for details of his family-2/2/2017
