Lyons family at Boherbue, Cork

Boherbue seems to be a possible, but not probable place that our Lyons family emigrated from in Cork. There are no Stephen Lyons here

1. The is another Lyons family at that time, Michael Lyons (born between 1811 and 1825 on different sources) married to Hellen Buckley. They had children Michael, b1850 and Timothy b1855

2. There is a second family, John Lyons, born circa 1817, married to Mary Murphy, who had a son William born in 1847

3. A Catherine Lyons born circa 1825.

There are a number of local web sites for the area, but very little genealogical information or local history is given

The facts as they exist

I found a forum entry on the web reading:-

"We are researching our Irish ancestors and have determined that my great grandfather Michael Lyons was born in Kiskeam. I am searching for any further information on the Lyons family or Buckley on his mother's side.

Michael Lyons was born August 15, 1850 and baptized September 5 in Boherbue. He may have lived in Doonasleen. By 1870 he had immigrated to the United States and lived in Taunton, Massachusetts. He died there in 1916 after having been hit by a train while working as a railroad crossing attendant. He left a wife, Mary, and ten children.

Michael's parents were Michael Lyons born c. 1811 and Ellen Buckley born c. 1815. Together they had 4 boys and 4 girls. Only my great grandfather Michael and one sister lived past childhood. As of 1891 both his parents and his one surviving sister were alive.

Hopefully a reader of this forum will be able to add more to the story or even connect us with their own family tree. Thanks! mitcjlyons@aol.com "

I emailed the post and got a reply from Chris Lyons on 31 July 2007

Hi David,

Very interesting. No one ever replied to my posting on that site. And I'm sure the phone book is full of Lyons.

My information posted on the Boherbue site comes from the application my great grandfather Michael Lyons filled out to join a collective insurance cooperative called The Sons of Forrester. This was an Knights of Columbus type organization Irish immigrants joined that flourished primarily in the state of Massachusetts in the late 1880's. It liquidated itself in the early 1900's or was subsumed into a larger insurance company. Anyway, its very solid information, being in Michael's hand itself. I have not traveled to Cork to look at any records. My Lyons family lived in Doonmore in Kiskeam

So my great great grandparents, Michael Lyons and Ellen Buckley are too young to be parents of Stephen but I think there's a chance that Stephen may be Michael's brother. And maybe Catherine is Ellen's sister. I'll assume you've exhausted Ancestry.com. I found this site for the Lucy family of Australia that details marriage and baptisms in Cork and Kerry with their family names. It looks like the Lucy's may have known my ancestors as they seem to have stood witness for each other at numerous baptisms and marriages. http://www.ozlists.com/allluceys/casey10.html

I've assumed that Helen Buckley is the same as Ellen Buckley in my case and have assembled a partial list of Michael's brothers and sisters from this site. If you look at Dec 5, 1855 under the "T" grouping (alphabetical listing at bottom) you'll see Timothy Lyons born in Doonmore. One of his god parents (witness 2) is Catherine Lyons. You can search through the site and find other references to her (or maybe Stephen) and maybe draw some more conclusions or information.

Unfortunately, that is all I have to offer at this time. If I find more, I'll update my posting. And of course, I'm very interested in any information connecting our families that you might find.

Thanks, Chris Lyons

And

Hi David,

The insurance application I have does not name names. However, it was filled out by Michael Lyons in 1891. At the time he states that his father (Michael Lyons) is 80 yrs old and his mother (Ellen Buckley) is 76 yrs old. Both in good health.

He also states that he had 3 brothers, all dead in 1891, who died at ages 8, 6 and 5. 2 died of the "croop" and 1 unknown. Also that he had 4 sisters, 3 dead in 1891, who died at ages 11, 7 and 2. 1 died of the croop and 2 unknown. My guess would be that they had influenza.

Its also interesting to note that, to apply to the Massachusetts Catholic Order of the Foresters, you need to have a sponsor. John Buckley seems to be Michael Lyons' sponsor. Maybe a cousin? I have not requested John Buckley's application but, as I write this, it seems I should.

In trolling through the Lucy web site, I filtered this list of baptisms that I think may be Michael Lyons and his brothers and sisters (except one). This is a bit subjective. Note the many different spellings of "Lyons".

note:Croup
Croup is usually caused by an inflammation or swelling in the larynx (voice box) and trachea (windpipe). The swelling makes a young child’s airway inflamed making it harder to breathe. Croup is most commonly causedby a viral upper respiratory infection. Children younger than 3 years of age are more likely ato get croup because their windpipes are narrow. Croup can come on suddenly, and in the middle of the night, when your child is at rest. Often it's accompanied by a coarse, harsh breathing that occurs when a child inhales.

emailed Chris Lyons in 2009 to ask if he would provide us with his DNA: answer NO.

Looking for a lady whom contacted a IVY LYONS,Grafton,NSW late 1970's or early 1980 who was tracing the LYONS family."

"Seek information on TOM MURPHY and ELIZA FITZGERALD, who were listed as witnesses to the September 18, 1847 marriage in Cork at Sts. Peter and Paul Church of RICHARD MURPHY and CATHERINE FITZGERALD. Could be that Tom was the father of the groom and that Eliza was the mother of the bride, or could be other relatives. Richard & Catherine ("Kate") had their first child, Elizabeth, in Cork and around 1850 emigrated to America where they had other children (John Emmet, Julia, Mary A. ("Lalla"), William R). Richard was a stone mason involved in construction projects. He had a step-brother named Timothy LYONS who emigrated before him, first to Canada in 1844, and then into New York. Would like to enlarge on Richard and Catherine's family connections. These are my elderly neighbor's relations that I am helping her to research. Funding has not permitted us at this juncture to delve into Irish records directly in Ireland (the marriage record was included in Kate's Civil War pension application on behalf of her husband's military service), and microfilm of records of Irish records seem mostly to be held in Irish repositories which we cannot access for lack of those funds. (Microfilm by the Mormon Libraries is pretty slim pickings for the areas we need for Cork.) Any help is appreciated."
