Timothy Lyons c1834-1877, hypothetical brother of Stephen Lyons 1827, & Descendants
What I know about his life and the lives of his children.:
No definite baptism found for Timothy Lyons: one possibility is 1831 to Timothy Lyons & Betty/Honorah Murphy in St. Marys, Cork .
1861. Timothy Lyons married Catherine Coughlan 12/02/1861 in Enniskean,[ witnesses were Daniel Coughlan & Denis Carthy: there is a baptism Enniskean Dec 1835 of Catherine Coughlan to Dan. Coughlan & ??. A Daniel Coughlan was her father: this fact on her 1879 marriage to Jeremiah Hurley in St. Georges RCC] but I failed to find evidence of Timothy Lyons''s baptism ~1831-4 & of the rest of this hypothetical family in the church records for Enniskean[ and neither did JL looking at the original Enniskean records in May 2009] and neighbouring parishes[ from the fiches in the NLI]

Timothy & Catherine had 9 children: although they did not bother to register many of their births with the State, they did baptise them! 2 died young.
1861. Stays in Enniskean all this year as son John Lyons was born there, baptised 26/11/1861 Enniskeane, sponsors Daniel Crowley & Julia Coghlan. John died 1874 in England
1863 Daughter Ellen Lyons is baptised in St. Finbarrs, Cork in 1863, godparents Mary Noonan & John Crowley . Ellen probably died by 1865 in Ireland,
1863-1865. Timothy Lyons moves on from Enniskean, via Cork City, to Bermondsey, most likely because he has relatives in Bermondsey. As daughter Ellen seems to be dead by the English 1871C, and no BMD Death entry for her in England, I assume she died around Cork before they left for England.
1866. Daughter Mary Lyons, b: 24/2/1866, baptised 25th February 1866, Dockhead. Godparents: Stephen Lyons and Mary Cahalan. Almost certain that this is our Stephen Lyons - few others with same name around - must be a relation from this.
1867. Son Timothy Lyons b.24/07/1867, Union Workhouse, St.John's. I have b.c. B19 , born 25/7/67. Informant Catherine Lyons, still in the Workhouse a week after the birth. And he was baptised 17/10/67, St. Georges RCC. Godparents: Patrick Lyons & Joanna Warren, Rev J Danell .BMD entry Sep 1867. The family must have been really poverty stricken for Catherine to enter the Workhouse for this birth., especially as she had a 6 yr old with spina bifida and a 1 yr old at this time. Workhouse records do not exist in 1867

1869. Son Cornelius Lyons born 7/11/1869 baptised at Our Lady of Salette. Godparents : Timothy Crowley & Ellen Hart. No BMD entry!
Cornelius 1869 -1927. Joined the Army, Queens [Royal West Surrey Reg], on 23/1/1891, having previously served in the 7th Batt. Rifle Brigade, aged 19 yrs 11mths - he also seems not to know his age or needed to keep it under 20 for some reason.!!. Next of Kin Catherine Lyons[ [ not so, has been Catherine Hurley since 1879!], 9 Woolf Street, Neuilly Road Dockhead. Serves in Malta 1891-1895, then E. Indies, Tirah & NW frontier of India 1897 & 8, home 1899, S. Africa Oct 1899, home Mar 1901. Various campaign medals: India medal 1895 with clasps Tirah 1897& 98 & Punjab 1897 & 1898 & S.Africa 1899-1901. Discharged 22/1/1903. 4 pages with his history on Findmypast - no conduct record with it.
1871C Timothy Lines, 40, wharf labourer, 'afflicted', in 2 Shipyard [court] , nr.Tooley Street, with wife Catherine 33 [Coughlan], both b.Cork, John 9, spinal congn. , Polly[Mary] 5, Timothy 3, Cornelius 1. Catherine actually 35.

1872. Son Jeremiah Lyons born 28/1/1872 - baptised 15/2/72 St. Georges RCC - god parent Joanna Warren, Rev R Kavanaugh ; this Joanna Warren who was godparent in 1867 & 1872 cannot be found in 1871 C, b. between 1800 & 1854, but there is a 25 year old Hannah Warren, but living north of the river, daughter of a John,55, from Cork: Warren showing up in Theory 2 in Ardskea!!], No BMD entry!. Jeremiah Lyons died 1940
1873.Catherine Lyons born 20/7/1873, baptised 3/8/1873 , godparents were James Murray and Margaret Collins, Dockhead. No BMD entry!!
1874. His son John Lyons , born 1861, suffering from spina bifida, dies, at Bethnal Place, Tooley Street. Dec 1874 aged 12 St. Olave 1d155. He is buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, given as 13, on 5/12/1874.[ I think Bethnal Place is probably the same as Bethel Place, which was between Tooley Street & the Thames, near Vine Street ].

1875. Daughter Bridget Lyons, born 12/4/1875, baptised 2/5/1875, Dockhead. Godparents Daniel and Mary Kane An entry on BMD!
1877. Anne Lyons born 23/10/1877, baptised 11/11/1877 Dockhead, godparents were Henry Denny and Elizabeth O'Brien , but , no BMD entry for any Lyons girl in Surrey that quarter or the next. Her father died in March 1878 in St Olaves Infirmary, and the family had a habit of not registering their births at the best of times!. Also no registered death in Surrey before 1881C, where she is not listed. But an Anne, born about 1877, is registered as dying 'Mar' 1878, 1c 31, London City[ but this could be a term then used for around Horslydown- seen it on something else!!], and mother still at 12 College Street on 12/3/1878. No burial Leytonstone??
All these 7 English born children were baptised: 4 at Dockhead, 2 at St. Georges &1 at Our Lady of Salette. Southwark Churches
1878. Timothy Lyons dies 11/3/1878 of phthisis pulmonalis at the St. Olave Union Infirmary. Informant his widow, Catherine, address of 12 College street.d.cD18 . He is buried, stated age 42, on 16/3/1878 at St.Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Interestingly the body is brought from 12 College Street . Records for those admitted to the Infirmary go back this far: they start 30/5/1876 but there would seem to be a gap between the first book, H3/OLA/II/1/1 which ends March 1877 and the next H3/OLA/II/1/2 which starts Oct 1880!

Holy Trinity, Dockhead, has a record of death for Timothy Lyons who died on 11th March 1878, aged 43. He was listed as residing at 12 College Street and buried in Leytonstone Cemetery - record of burial there shown above, showing that his body was brought from 12, College Street & age given as 42 .
1879. The 44 yr old widowed Catherine has moved from 12 College Street to Slades Court [west of Our Lady. Melior St.] with her 7 surviving children, aged 2-13. Life must have been a struggle for a year until she remarried a man aged just 23 in St.Georges RCC. . Married 14-04-1879 Jeremiah(?) Hurley of 22, Redcross Street, Borough. the son of John Hurley, & Catherine Lyons of 12, Slades Court, Borough the daughter of Daniel Coughlan and widow of Timothy Lyons. Witnesses; John D--orau of 2 Ship Yard, Tooley Street[ this is where she was living in 1871C] ,and Julia Taylor, 10, Stephens Square, Kent Street. Rev. J.C. Moore Ref. B11 -43. details from Bernard Cullen, Dec 2009, researcher at St. Georges RCC.
And 1 month later, she had had another child . Born 29-05-1879 Baptised 19-06-1879 in St.Georges RCC. Margaret Hurley daughter of Jeremiah & Catherine Hurley (nee Coughlan) Godparents Patrick Barry & Catherine Denny. Rev. J. Reeks. Ref. V4 - 714. This child was called Ellen Hurley in 1881C, and also on her death registration in 1882.
1881C. Living at 26 College Street, Jeremiah Hurley 23/5 general labourer b.Tooley St., Catherine 38 b. Cork[ a bit young!, nearer 46], step children Mary Llyons 15, Timothy 13, Cornelius 11, Jeremiah 9, Catherine 6, Bridget 5, all Llyons & Ellen Hurley 1, all children b. Horsleydown, and, as one of 4 lodgers, albeit probably in a different part of the house, blind John Lyons, 58, unm., no occupation, b. Co. Cork!!.

Despite the age daftness, 48-50 is more realistic , I feel sure this is the same blind John Lyons as was with Stephen Lyons in 1871C. His mother, Honorah, has died June 1870, he moves in with eldest brother Stephen in 1870, and, maybe 3 or 4 years later transfers to live with brother Timothy. Then when Timothy dies in March 1878 , blind John Lyons continues in his sister-in-law's household:..
1891C. Living at 9 Woolf Street, John Hurley 33 waterside. labourer b. Bermondsey, Kaie 40[real age here nearer 50 but entry might actuslly read 48] , b. Ireland Cork, Timothy Lyons 20 carman, Kate Lyons 17 sackwoman, Bridget Lyons 15, all b.Bermondsey..[Ellen Hurley dies age 3 in Sep 1882]. In the same house is Kaie's daughter, Mary, who married [ M20, in a protestant church, see cert. below] William Osborne in 1885 : Mary Osborne is the informant, a' cousin', on 1894 d.c D19 of John Lyons: she was 15 when he was living in the same house, 26 College Street, as she in the1881C . If her father Timothy had indeed been John's brother , she would be John's niece: could this be an argument to say that Timothy & John were in fact just cousins rather than brothers, or is it just a loose use of 'cousin'?

No Cornelius Lyons here: he had joined the Rifle Brigade, number 2478, in 1890, age 19, living 8 Thorne Street, Kingsland Road, no next of kin given, complexion fair, blue eyes, formerly having worked in the London Docks. By 1901C, an army reservist. No Jeremiah Lyons either - had he also enlisted?
The Mary Osborne 24 shown on the above census image as also living in 9 Woolf Street is the daughter Mary Lyons born 1865 who married William H. Osborne in a Protestant Church! in 1885

1901C: 18 Woolf Street Bermondsey, Katherine Hurley 63 widow no occupation given, Timothy Lyons 33 carman, Cornelius Lyons 29 army reserve, Kate 26 & Bridget 24 sack makers & Ellen Hagerty, 63, lodger b.Ireland blind . Where is Jeremiah?? Cannot find any of these Lyons children on Genes

Catherine Hurley probably dies aged 67 Dec 1909 St. Olave 1d.121.
Children of Timothy Lyons

Cornelius Lyons 1869 -1927. Joined the Army, Queens [Royal West Surrey Reg], on 23/1/1891, having previously served in the 7th Batt. Rifle Brigade, aged 19 yrs 11mths - he also seems not to know his age or needed to keep it under 20 for some reason.!!. Next of Kin Catherine Lyons [ not so, she has been Catherine Hurley since 1879!], 9 Woolf Street, Neuilly Road Dockhead. Serves in Malta 1891-1895, then E. Seemingly nobody searching this family on Genes -Jan 2011.

1924. Timothy Lyons,1867, probably dies a bachelor in Southwark, age 56, in 1924 1d.24 . From Ancestry National Probate Registry, Timothy Lyons of 35 Pocock Street, Blackfriars Road, dies 21/2/1924 in Southwark Infirmary, leaving £425.7.5d . Administration to Cornelius Lyons, storekeeper. If this and the 1911C entry above is 'our' Timothy Lyons [ they are certainly the same Timothy, same address], then it would seem that his brother Cornelius Lyons is still alive: & there is a death
1927. Cornelius Lyons, 57, Southwark Dec 1927. He, of 53 Larnaca Street, died 12/10/1927 in Guys Hospital Southwark , Administration to Annie Lyons widow - effects £255.10s. In 1945, Annie Lyons & Annie M at 23 Major Road, plus John J in 1946, then just mother & daughter up to 1953. The pair at 85 Pynfolds in 1955, still there 1960 . No later records on Ancestry. 1968. Jeremiah & Emily living 18 Hazelrigge Rd Balham in 1933, Gaskell Street Balham in 1937.

Did Cornelius get through ~ £170 of Timothy's money in 3 years or did some of the money go to other relatives, such as the siblings, Mary Osborne, Catherine & Bridget & Jeremiah Lyons.??
Jeremiah Lyons, 1872-1940. Living with his mother and siblings 1881C but not found either in 1891C nor in 1901C.
