Note: I have not distinguished the data that is new to 2009. Purpose was to trace my g.g/grandfather, Stephen Lyons, born Co.Cork ~1827. Married to a Catherine Buckley, b.~1827, Co.Cork. Producing children in Bermondsey , Nov,1852, but no marriage could be found in England.This marriage was found[2009] in a book in Cork County Library containing baptisms and marriages for St. Marys & St. Annes, Cork City. Ref. 16.38.22 Stephen Lyons married Catherine Buckley, 31/07/1851. Witnesses were Michael Irvine & Mrs Cronin. [Librarian rang the cathedral to obtain these: this marriage should be on reel 4785, but I did not find it. Note: Irvine is an unknown name in Ireland. He does not appear in Great Britain censuses of 1861, nor as a ratepayer in St. Annes parish in Griffiths, July 1852]
[I also possess a g.g.grandfather David Tobin ,married to a Margaret Buckley in 1852,Southwark, of similar provenance, so some records noted for them. And from the English censuses, I suspect that a Timothy Lyons,c1834, married to a Catherine Coughlan, was a brother, or at least a cousin of Stephen And that Stephen's parents could well have been a Timothy and Honora Lyons who also had sons John c.1832 and Patrick c.1840]

BUTTEVANT (NLI-Reel 4998) The following are Marriages. 1814 – 1880. Only searched:
1816 – Feb 1827 No Lyons [1814 illegible.]
1846 Aug. – 1852 Oct. No Lyons [in 1847 John Lyons was a witness at one]. Did not search again in 2009, but did get access to the records in the church, courtesy of the sacristan ,Liam, and found nothing I did not have. Have also looked at 1901 & 1911Cs and no Lyonses around in Ardshea or Ardprior then, and only one elderly spister around Lisgriffin in 2009, and we were assured she had no connection with either of these townlands.
SUMMARY.
Have produced a map of this area this shows the townlands and the Lyons in each, and is an easier way of following what was going on. There is also an overall map of Cork showing you where Buttevant actually is.
There are several Lyons families living round Ardshea and Ardprior, resp. 4-5 miles WSW & W of Buttevant. Cannot locate" Greymiles", but think it must have been Grange West. 2-3 miles east of Ardshea (the old records are very difficult to read in places). 3 siblings of Stephen,1827, are thus just shown as born in Buttevant. As the crow flies Ardshea is nearer Ballyclogh, and Ardprior nearer Liscaroll.
Dreenagh is between Ardshea & Ardprior.
Knockanare is 1 mile E. of Buttevant, towards Doneraile.
Velvetstown is is 2 miles N.
Boherascrub is under a mile E. of Ardshea.
Tinnascart is 2 miles N.W.
Ratheclare is 1 mile N.
In 1818-1838, Edmond, Patrick[2?], John[2?], Marg., Peg, David, Mary, James, Tim? are producing children..
Denis, Ellen, Eliza, Honora, Thomas are also living there.
I searched Mallow Heritage Centre for Edmond[Ardskea] & Patrick[Ardprior] marriage which I did not find in NLI.
Patrick married in 1824 in Killavullen, 6 m. E of Mallow,~11m.Ardprior. Incorrect m.c.- different wife.

Certainly all my family Christian names exist in Catlemagner..

Reel 5010, Kilbrin, should have baptisms 1807-1845, 1845-1880. Also Marriages 1805-1867. Need to examine this in 2009, to see if any more births IGI has Tim.Lyons b. 1823 Ireland to Daniel & Ellen: but this not 1823 Castletownroche baptism. What nonsense is this? - could be anywhere in Ireland surely?
A Timothy has 99 acres in 1829 Desertserges Tithe & 16 plus 43 acres in 1825 Clonmeen Tithe. Clonmeen records on 5011,Banteer, seemingly only starting in 1847, yet MHC claim their records start in 1828?!
So have not got Tim.Lines[afflicted] marriage to Catherine Coughlan in Mallow area 1853-1862. But have now found him 1861 Enniskean.

Boherbue is one of the 9 Cork parishes in Kerry; known as Kilmeen up to 1888. The old church was in Kilmeen churchyard. The small thatched church was also used as a school- Hedge school report of 1862. Original Kilmeen parish very large, stretching from Knockaclarig nr.Brosna to Killenleigh nr.Kanturk. Before 1861 presbytery was located in Derryleigh.

Reel 5010, Kilbrin, should have baptisms 1807-1845, 1845-1880. Also Marriages
1805-1867. Need to examine this in 2009, to see if any more births IGI has
Tim.Lyons b. 1823 Ireland to Daniel & Ellen: but this not 1823 Castletownroche
baptism. What nonsense is this? - could be anywhere in Ireland surely?
A Timothy has 99 acres in 1829 Desertserges Tithe & 16 plus 43 acres in
1825 Clonmeen Tithe. Clonmeen records on 5011,Banteer, seemingly only starting
in 1847, yet MHC claim their records start in 1828?!
So have not got Tim.Lines[afflicted] marriage to Catherine
Coughlan in Mallow area 1853-1862. But have now found him 1861 Enniskean.

The old church was in Kilmeen churchyard. The small thatched church was also
used as a school- Hedge school report of 1862. Original Kilmeen parish very
large, stretching from Knockaclarig nr.Brosna to Killenleigh nr.Kanturk. Before
1861 presbytery was located in Derryleigh.

Church of Ireland Cathedral) "Cathe" is presumably an abbreviation

There are 4 Lyons families living in Kilworth in 1851[a partial census surviving from here] They are headed by a Patrick 58 & Margaret 50, a John 60 & Jane 50, a James 40 & Catherine 38, and John 50 & Ellen 48, the likely parents of William 1835, ancestor of Gay ONeill. It is likely that some of these are brothers.

Feb.2009.Visited Lisgriffin Church and spoke with Francis OConnel -02248172 - who told us that the surviving , elderly,Miss Lyons[mentioned in Buttevant] came from somewhere else, not local -father a Francis? Lyons - but I thought he said Templemary, and that was fairly closeby!. In the separate graveyard , saw the grave of Daniel Warren, Ardskeagh, 1830-1879.[Ardskeagh had 373 acres, Ardprior 761 acres, Lisgriffin 305 acres, Templemary 770 acres in the 1833 tithe. - a Maurice Lyons/Lynes? had 45 acres at Ardskeagh; no Lyons at Ardprior] He would most likely have been a nephew of the Mary Warren married to Edmond Lyons, parents of Stephen 1829.[Warrens still lived at Drinagh West in ~2000: now Derry Connell lived there/Boreen]. Also a grave ,erected by wife Ellen Connelly, of Patrick Graddy, 54, died 1796 , just possibly a relation of Ann Graddy from Kilbrin who married Stephen Lyons in 1824, and Ellen Connelly was the name of Catherine Buckley's mother??!!. . Spoke withNoel Coleman, sacristan,in Buttevant and looked at the printed book of baptisms in the church: these seemed to be identical to what I had recorded in NLI 2008. In Cork Library, I looked at the 1901C for Templemary[236] and found that there were 7 houses then in Ardaprior, 3 in Ardskeagh, 5 in Dreenagh West, 6 in Lisgriffin, 12 in Templemary and 6 in Tinnascart: no lyonses in any, but 4 Warrens, John 42,Mary 32, Michael 8 & Daniel 2 at Ardskeagh. Richard Fuge, of the local landlord family , was not resident in Templemary House. . . Francis referred us to John O'Connell, butcher, back in Buttevant. He knew nothing about Lyonses, but said that Warren was an unusual name in the area and that there had only been one family around, at Dreenagh West = Ardskea. Last Warren died 2000-2008. But a Derry Connell still lived there. John told us about dowries. Also that landlords gave ~£5 tickets for emigration, but at one time a 4yr queue!. He said I should research Ellen Connelly,[rather than John Buckley] when looking for parents of Catherine Buckley. Before the famine there had been ~5700 people in Buttevant,after it ~50%. Landlords went bankrupt as tenants could not pay their rents and the government bought their land for 13 times the rent; then gave Land Annuities for a 75 yr period, these becoming die around 1950. Last survivor of Nicholas Fuges, TempleMary House, died ~1960. Someone had 100 acres at Gurteenroe in 1850 - the Warrens??

MHC has 2 Mary baptisms to father John in 1842-6 period, both in 1842.Both
a Honora McCarthy and a John Lyons were married in 1835
in Mitchelstown. Mary Lyons was my great grandmother.
She arrived in Australia in 1865,stated age 22,and married my great grandfather
John Laing on 20th July 1869,stated age then 23, at Newcastle NSW. My grandmother
was their first child Agnes Laing born 1869. She arrived on the ship "Wallasea"
on the 27th September 1865 in the single womens quarters. (see Lang file for
copy of passenger list). Reel 2140, 2483. Archives Ref: 14990 . Stated that
she came from Mitchelltown (or Mitchelstown) Co Cork. R/C. Religion and her
parents were John Lyon (Farmer) and Honora McCarthy, Mitcheltown Co,Cork Ireland.
she died 1904, stated age 62.The Wallasea departed Plymouth on 30th May 1865.
Her Relation in colony was Robert Johnson her cousin living at Clarencetown
on the Williams River NSW. Made contact with a descendant of Robert Johnson
in September 2008.n.b. There is another family of Lyons on the same ship:Wallasea
1865 Reel 2140 2483.Lyons, Cornelius 31, Honor 33, Margaret 6, Catherine 5,
Mary 3, Julia 1. Reel 2140, 2483. Checked the sponsorship and parentage and
native place and are not the same as Mary. So probably no relation. Made
contact with a descendant (Terry Seery) of Robert Johnson in September 2008.

Robert Johnston is listed as a Pioneer in the Clarencetown/Williams river area.
He arrived on the ship "Calcutta" into Sydney on 13th October 1838
as a Bounty Immigrant with his wife Margaret O'Brien and 3 year old son.
Sons were: John born 1835, Michael born 1837 and Terrence born 1839 at Irish
Town (Terry Seery's ggfather) Terrence died at Brookfield NSW on 31st December
1921. Terrence (Terry) and Bridget Stack (died at Dungog 1930) had 11 children.
The third last was Alice Agatha who was Terry Seery's grandmother who married
his grandfather James Patrick Seery whose father migrated to Australia from
Ireland in 1860. Alice died at Woollahra in 1953. He has fond memories of visiting
Dungog and delivering milk with Toby Johnson. The Pioneer Grave at Sandgate
Cemetery NSW is where four generations of Johnson's are buried. Lyn

2. Re: Daniel ~1850. In fact the date given is a guess.
I need to get to Tiperary to get at my grandfather's birth record (I have a
copy of his birth certificate) but as he was born in Mitchelstown Work
House I have only the name of his parents (Daniel Lyons and Margaret Meade)
and the suggestion from my mother (who was from Mayo not Cork) that he had Lyons
cousins who had property outside Mitchelstown (though my grandfather certainly
did not).
This suggests that the Daniel Lyons (1850ish) had siblings. This is supplemented
by when I met some people from near Macroom they thought, from my looks, that
I was a member of the Lyons family from near their home. [Daniel]Joe.

ton of info on my Lyons family, but I'll need to dig it out. The short version
is this:Mary Lyons was born in Castelyons in 1831. Her parents were Matthew
Lyons (b. 1799) and Catherine Lane (b. 1800). Matthews father was also Matthew.
No MHC record for this birth! Catherine's father was Harry Lane.Mary
above had numerous siblings - I have the names and birth years but will have
to find them. This Lyons family emigrated down the St. Lawrence River and settled
first in Franklin County, New York, about 1831 (they left Ireland just after
Mary was born). They later moved to western Massachusetts, settling finally
in North Adams in the 1850s. My Mary married Dennis Dinneen, also of Castlelyons
(the families clearly knew each other in the old country) in 1850. They then
moved out to Waupaca County, Wisconsin - true pionneers.Have you come across
other Lyons families from Castlelyons? If so, I'd love to have their email addresses
so I could contact them. I look forward to seeing your database - great initiative.

I have discovered that William Henry (1839) was married first to Mary Ann (born 1840 St George's London - maiden name Adams) Marriage 'Jun' 1868 St.Geo.E 1c.833 . They had two daughters, Elizabeth (1869 London) and Mary Ann (1871 London). An early census return shows William's place of birth as Cork, Ireland and his employment was that of musician , aged 14, 1851C, 1861C?? [2 other Peters & Margarets up north!], Umbrella makeraged 23,1871C b. Cork, labourer 1881C,Annuitant 1891C, bricklayers labourer 1901C, musician?- this from family lore?.After the death of Mary Ann (1840), William married Louisa Coventry (nee Dukes 1844 Hoxton London): marriage Sep 1878 Mile End 1c.924.They then had four children bearing the Lyons name; John (1879 St Georges), Lillian M (1880 London), Ada (1882 Mile End London (died 1882)) and George (1883) Interesting no son called Peter!.I am descended from Louisa' s daughter Charlotte by her first marriage to Edwin Coventry.when an old aunt died a few years ago I inherited some family momentoes including a photo of - possibly - William Lyons holding a fiddle. I'll get the full entry for Jeremiah Lyons shortly. Hope it gives John and Ellen
again as parents.No, mother is Judith Keeffe (The Hanlon/Scanlon discrepancy
seems like a mistranscription – I haven't seen the original). I cannot find
a Patrick~1830at Inniscarra or Banteer,nor a John birth to a John at the right
time on MHC site! My father in England has a copy of the 1875 Will of John
Lyons (died 10 March 1875 aged 80) of Faha, Inniscara. I'll try to get a copy.
John gives his wife as Margaret but I think this is a second marriage. Dad also
has Letters of Administration for John Lyons, Cornelius' brother, who died at
Allahabad, India 21 Dec 1888. The DOB I have for him is 1846, which seems a
long time after the 1821 marriage of his parents. Perhaps he was a son of the
second wife? Certainly John Sr was of an age to marry in 1821.Cornelius' age
at death doesn't seem to match the baptism, although this might have been years
after his birth. The will links John of Faha to his son Cornelius, builder of
Lee, Kent, so we know the connection to be correct. . . My Nan, Ivy Lyons said
one brother of Cornelius was a priest, the other went to the USA. This must
refer to Jeremiah and Patrick . ..Dad has a small picture of Cornelius – again,
I'll ask my sister to scan it and send me a decent copy so I can forward it
to you. He will get back to me once he has visited his father,end July
6.Enquiry on a Jeremiah 1837! IJean's reply: have deleted the Lyons on my tree other than Hannah Lyons who was born in Cork abt 1835. She was also known as Fanny/Ann but I have her marriage certificate and she was Hannah at that time. Her father was Patrick. 7. Re: Cornelius 1841. I have only recently started
my family tree research! I was amazed how common the name Lyons was in Ireland.
I can share the small amount I have discovered so far. Cornelius Lyons (my great
grandfather) was born on Cork c1841. I do not know when he came over to England,
the first record I have found is the 1881 census. He was living in Wandsworth
with his wife Elizabeth (c1838 - Devizes) and 2 children Herny John c1873 and
Charles 4/2/1887 - my grandfather. Cornelius was a builder by trade and I understand
that after the death of Elizabeth in1890 he lost all of his money and ended
up in the workhouse. I would be interested in receiving a link to your research,

I found her name through www.irish-roots.ie when searching for the baptism record of my great great grandfather John Curtin born 1861 - his mother was Mary Lyons though she is the only Lyons so far in my tree. I found her marriage record on the same site but it unfortunately did not give her father's name nor the place of marriage. I think her father may have been Michael. I will though be contacting the Mallow Heritage Centre to see why there is not mention of place of marriage. 9. Re. Michael Lyons 1832. We are descended from John Lyons c1840 son of Edward and Bridget c1809. John's brother is Michael c1832. We only know that they (John and Michael)were born in Cork from the censuses. We are assuming Cork city. Edward and John were papermakers. We were not able to find Edward in the UK census at all. Michael is on the 1851 uk census and John and his mother first appear in the 1861 census. We have not been able to locate any more siblings. We have not found any official records for them, would not know where to start with so little info! However we assume they were catholics as they were both married in the catholic church. However, I do not have any information on Patrick before 1851. I am related down the line of John Lyons (1849) born Deptford. However, I believe that William Lyons (1847) born Ireland, must have been from a previous marriage because Susan Witham born in Hertfordshire, as far as I can tell, was never in Ireland. In the 1841 census Susan was still in Hertfordshire. 14.re. Mary & Thomas Lyons . I have not delved very much into my family tree as yet but from some information that my mother left me her Grandfather - Thomas Lyons was born in Roscommon County Cork. Don't know when he came out to Australia, but he married my Grandmother (Anne Stack who was born in Kerry, Ireland) here in Australia. They had 7 children - James, Martin, Thomas(JNR), Annie, Agnes, Emily and May. Martin was my mother's father and he was born on the 3rd May 1886. Hope this is of some help. Michele Dick . 15. Re. Jeremiah 1847 nr. Crookstown. My
father was a Doctor in Barnsley S. Yorkshire. He was born in Skeheenarinky[~12
k W of Mitchelstown] in S. Tipperary. His mother was Teresa Mulcahy, a teacher
in Skeheenarinky and his father was Tom Lyons, a teacher in Kilbheny a few miles
away. Tom was from a farming family in Garraneleigh just north of Crookstown
Co. Cork. There were lots of ‘Lyons’ families in this area and through DNA we
have established a 100% connection with one of them through the ‘Paternal Line‘.
Because I only have the DNA proof, you will have to go back through a few ‘Unknowns’
on my tree and then come forward again to see the other side of the family.

Genes who’s husband was Jeremiah. It was Sheila who organised the DNA test between
her son and myself. The test is a Y-chromosome signature, based on 10 markers

William's great granddaughter Katherine Lyons married Frederick Strath, in my former husband's line.
