William Turner 1848 - 1903

1848 Jan/Mar Born Buntingford, near Layston, Herts to parents William Turner & Mary Cooper.[see reasoning below]

1851 C. Living with family at 49 High St, Layston, Herts. His father William Turner had been born at Sandon, Herts, and his mother at Morden, Cambridgeshire.

1861C . Living in Front St, Buckland, Herts, Mary Turner 40, widow, milliner, John 16 ag. lab.,born St. Morden Cambs, William 13, Hannah 9[these 2 born Buntingford], Elizabeth 7, Charles 5, Fanny 3[ these 3 all born Buckland]. The reg. district of Royston covers Buntingford, Layston & Buckland: so William Turner was born' mar 1848 6.573 Royston ', Fanny was born Mar 1858 & father William had died Jun 1858 in Royston. From this I can deduce that probably a William Turner married Mary Cooper in 'Sep 1845 Royston 6.735'. There is a Mary Cooper 20, living in Steeple Morden in 1841C, with probably brother Thomas 15, ag. lab., and probable mother, Mary 55. Probably mpossible to locate William Turner b~1823 Sandon Herts, as this is too vague and no birth place shown in 1841C, just whether in or outside county of residence. Only obtaining the 1845 marriage cert. would tell us more.

1866 Aug 29. William Turner joined the army in 1866. 9 pages of his service record exist and give a good base for following his life

1871C. William Turner not obviously in 1871C, but his mother Mary Turner has remarried John Tebbitt, b. Soham,Cambs, a tailor journeyman, and is living in Chelmsford Essex with 4 of her Turner children[ just William & Hannah missing], 3 of his first marriage children and 1 common son,Thomas Tebbitt, 8, b. Buntingford[actually Mar 1863 Royston: odd thing is I cannot find a John Tebbitt marriage 1861-1863]

1871 Dec 26 Married Ellen Kavanagh in Dublin

1873 Jan 16 Posted to India

1874 Jun 14. His first wife Ellen died, presumably in India..

1888. His second child, Florence Amelia Turner born in Deptford but registered Poplar 1888,

1891C , he is living at 17 Church Street, Poplar working as a Foreman of Machinery1891census

1892. His third child Alice Beatrice Turner born Poplar

1896-1899. Moved to Dunmow to run the Star Inn

William Turner 1848 was also listed as the publican at the Star in Kellys in 1899 & 1902[ but not in 1895 & 1906]. Dunmow Electoral Roll Books would tell me what years he was living in Dunmow.

Nancy thinks this photo is of her greatgrandfather, William Turner

Lane leading up to the Star at the top, round to left. . . . .1903 photo of the Star Inn , hanging in the Starr in 2009

1901C, the publican at the Star Inn, Dunmow.

1903 He died Dunmow Jun 4a 383, alleged age 49.

1911C. His widow Mary Ann Turner,60, is living at Parsonage Down, Dunmow, with her daughter Alice Turner. Mary Turner has had 5 children, 2 of whom have died- these might have been children by her first husband, but the census does say she had been married 34 years, which leads to the date of her 2nd marriage 1877 to William Turner: so feel these dead children were Turners.[A lot of infant Turner deaths in Poplar 1888-1898. No London Baptisms for Florence Amelia Turner or Alice Beatrice Turner]

.

Mary Ann Turner could die Dunmow Dec 1918 /Dec 1919, both aged 73, or Sep 1921 aged 76. All 3 ages somewhat out!

Alice Beatrice Turner is still single at the wedding of her brother, William George Turner, in 1916.
