Children of James Rousell

March 2018: in contact with Adrian Lewis whose great great uncle was Alfred Lewis, ~1836 - email at end of page

1. Ellen E. Rousell. 1829 - ....Aged 22, b. Tilmanstone, living with parents, no occupation given, in 1851C. Ellen Elizabeth Roselle married William Gale Newington Mar 1857. In 1871C she was looking after Jane Mary Lewis and another surprise being that she appears to have a brother, one year older, Alfred Lewis Jnr. Moving to the 1881 census the two children are still together but under the care of John and Mary Mooney in Islington both being referred to as 'step-children' when in the previous census were niece and nephew.

1871C. Derringstone Street, Barham- the 2 households on the same census page, maybe 2 households in between

James Rousell’s eldest child was Ellen Elizabeth, born Tilmanstone 1828. She married William Gale, a tailor, in 1857. Did you ever undertake any further research into this couple? The reason I ask is that another Ancestry addict called into question the correctness of the information I have been using from the 1861 census return indicating William and Ellen’s information with two children, nephew and niece, Alfred Jnr and Jane May Lewis – the children of Alfred and Susannah Jane Lewis. She is correct in that the census clerk has transposed Jane Mary to Mary J Lewis and ordinarily I would be overly concerned. But, she also made me aware that Alfred and Susannah had given birth to another child, Rosy (most probably Rosa after Alfred’s half sister) Mary Ann Brokenshaw Lewis, born 14/04/1859 and sadly dying in 1861. Where the BROKENSHAW name comes from I don’t know! This has occurred a couple of times in that Lewis generation with Alfred’s older brother being Andrew Philimore Lewis and his youngest half brother being Henry Dutton Lewis. The middle names are meaningless to me. - Adrian 28-4-2021

Census 1881 does not suggest the Mooney surname for them in brackets. Who is Mary Mooney, and who are the younger 2 Lewis stepchildren?? Has Susannah's widower had 2 more children, maybe with the Mary of Mary Mooney??

John Mooney married Mary Ann Lewis Islington Dec 1880

And an Alfred Lewis had married Mary Ann Laud in Eastry Dec 1871

An Alfred Lewis, 49, dies Islington Sep 1879 - Adrian has d.c. Alfred given as a Corn Chandler, informant A. Lewis- his 1863 son? So, both age- he should be ~43- and profession suspect

2. William Rousell 1831 - ... Aged 10, still at home. Aged 20, b. Barham, unmarried, and a footman in a G.P.'s household in Margate, 1851C. Maybe married in Faversham in 'Sep' 1854 to Ann Stanford or Sarah Jarritt. He attended his sister's wedding in 1858 in Shelley. Have looked quickly in 1861C and no obvious entry. 1871C, aged 40, b. Barham, married, Butler, in Bromley, wife not living in house where he is working. No obvious BMD death in Kent.. No one researching him on Ancestry -aug 2011.

3. Susannah Jane Rousell. 1834 -1864 . In 1851C, aged 18, b. Barham, a house servant in a rich household (the Tollemache family of bankers whose family home was Higham, in Kent) .with many servants in Patrixbourne [4m SE of Canterbury]. Marries [ down as S.J.Rousselle] Alfred Lewis 'Mar' 1857 1a.287 St. Geor. Hanover Square - not on London marriages! but a Marriage bond exists 25/2/1857. Both she and Alfred given as aged 21 and both living St Georges, Hanover Square..

She attends Elizabeth's wedding in Shelley in 1858. Have looked quickly and once again in 2011 in 1861C & 1871C and no obvious entries. Susannah died of TB in 1864 at the Consumption Hospital in London which became the Brompton Hospital. I have only recently learned from an American connection that Alfred and Susannah had a child, Jane Mary Lewis, born 1864 (I have the BC), she was baptised in the November after the death of her mother . Maybe death is Susanna Lewis Kensington Sep 1864

"Good afternoon, I found your contact address from the Lyons family information on Ancestry and trust you don't mind my approach. One of my g grandfather's older brothers was Alfred Lewis who married Susannah Jane Rousselle in 1857, as you are aware. She had worked for the Tollemache family of bankers whose family home was Higham, in Kent. If you contact me I can provide a copy of the sale catalogue for interest, no I didn't make an offer! Alfred was butler to the Hardinge family in London, they were of military descent and diplomats connected strongly with India. I found Susannah died of TB in 1864 at the Consumption Hospital in London which became the Brompton Hospital. I have only recently learned from an American connection that Alfred and Susannah had a child, Jane Mary Lewis, born 1864 (I have the BC), she was baptised in the November after the death of her mother. Alfred remained with the Hardinge family as they moved to a country home in Tor Morham, a suburb of Torquay, confirmed by the 1871 Census. After that I have searched for over 10 years for any trace of him, nothing! I find within the information on Ancestry that Susannah was a witness to her sister Elizabeth Annie's marriage to Francis Robinson. The 1871 Census return suggests another sister, Ellen (married to William Gale) was looking after Jane Mary Lewis and another surprise being that she appears to have a brother, one year older, Alfred Lewis Jnr. Moving to the 1881 census the two children are still together but under the care of John and Mary Mooney in Islington both being referred to as 'step-children' when in the previous census were niece and nephew. Are you able to clarify what occurred here and identify the spousal changes for the carers? Have you any more information as to what happened to the children? Should you require copies of any of the documents I have you only have to ask and I'll forward these on to you gladly. Kind regards, Adrian Lewis.............adrian.lewis4@btopenworld.com PS I'm based in Leeds, West Yorkshire"

4.. no name Rousell 1838 _ .... Twin of Elizabeth. He/she must have died at birth , as no baptism with Elizabeth in June 1838.1841C :

5. Elizabeth Anne Rousell 1838

6. Jemima Rousell 1841 - 1842.

I saw your family history pages on the web.  I found a document that might interest you:

It’s a mortgage deed dated 12March 1954, for Joseph Alexander Rousell, an Outfitter, who moved from Faversham to “Cranford, Crabble Hill, Dover” (now 27 London Road, River, Dover CT17 0SF).   I wondered if he was one of James Rousell’s descendants. . . . . . . . Seemingly only if descended from William1831.
