Elizabeth
Lyons From Our Lady of Salette register Elizabeth Lyons born 9/03/1864 , baptised 20/03/1864,
gp. John Murphy & Ann Hearley to parents Stephen Lyons & Catherine Lyons, nee Buckley. I cannot find a b.c. on BMD;
Jun 1865 is not her. I concluded, that like brother Michael/Joseph, she was
registered under a different name, Sarah?, Sep 1864 St.G. Southwark ? or Ellen
Dec 1864 St.G. Southwark, 1d.143?; more likely Sarah as I cannot find a Sarah
in 1871C, but both of these a little late but maybe Sarah could have been born
as early as mid-June & not registered till Jul-Sep quarter, but neither
are even in St. Olaves or Bermondsey : no female Lyons born 1864 St.Olaves
or Bermondsey. Obtained the cert. for a Bridget in 1864 , but this was
not her.
UB2. Possible birth 27/04/1865 in St. Olave as Eliza Lyons ; this is NOT her. Parents are Thomas Lyons & Johanna Casey[married Jun 1864, Bermondsey - unsurprisingly not in a protestant church!], 10 College St.[curious 'cos Stephen was at 26 College St. in 1861]
1871 Census-
taken on April 2/3 1871 .Eventually family found under "Lynes".
Stephen, age 45, b.Co Cork. 36 Brunswick Court, Bermondsey.
"Dock Labourer"
Catherine, wife, 45, b. Co Cork
Timothy, son, 17, b.Bermondsey, Surrey. "Wharf Labourer"
Mary, daughter, 15 b.Bermondsey, Surrey
Stephen, son, 11, b.St Olaves, Surrey
Michael, son, 9, b.St Olaves, Surrey
Eliza, daughter, 7, b.St Olaves, Surrey.
Also given is John Lyons, and it says "son", age
35 and blind.
Also at same address are a family of 3 names Lacey, the parents born Limerick,
and their 1 year old son, b.Co.Cork

1881 Census She appears, aged 17, listed as daughter, book folder, living with just her parents at 10, Freemans Lane. .

1888. When her father Stephen , living 15 Snowsfield, entered St. Olave Workhouse , destitute, on /7/188 her mother Catherine is given as living at Millstream Road. So I would suspect Elizabeth is also living there with her, as they appear together in 1891C. .
1890. Father Stephen dies, 1/03/1890, in St. Olaves Infirmary. He is down as of 3 Cross Street.. as is her brother Michael, the informant on the d.c.
1891C. Living at 2, Hanover Buildings, Horsleydown[ but brother
Michael no longer living with the family: he has married in 1879]. I could find no entry for 2 Hanover Buildings in the Electoral Roll Books for this year or 1890 or 1892.

Hanover Buildings, now Devon Mansions, has never belonged to PeabodyTrust. The flats were constructed by James Hartnoll, who built a largenumber of working-class dwellings in London, on both sides of theThames, in the latter part of the 19th century.
The external appearance of Hartnoll's properties does resemble Peabody's in some ways, so it is understandable when people assume they are something to do with Peabody Trust, although there is in fact no connection. Information about James Hartnoll is not plentiful, but I, Christine Wagg, have a copy of a short article about him and I will include a photocopy in the information I will (eventually!) be sending you by post. He seems to have developed housing more as a commercial venture than a philanthropic one.
1892. Catherine Lyons, born 1829, admitted on 4/3/1892, on order of StJ. Thomas, to the St. Olave Infirmary. Discharged Monday 30/5/1892 at her own request: LMA Infirmary Book H3/OLA/11/1/011. Then on 10/8/1892 she was admitted to St. Olaves Workhouse, aged 63, of 15 Boss Street, due to 'Sons neglect' , relations given as sons Michael of 12 Curlew Street, & Timothy & Stephen, both of unknown address. She was discharged on 18/8/1892 - fiche X104/287. Four days later, 22/8/1892, she was admitted to the Little Sisters of the Poor Carehome,
St. Peters House. Their records have that Catherine was living in Dockhead, at a lodging house, before entering
St. Peters House, Meadow Road, Lambeth on 22/08/1892; she was recommended by
the Sisters of Mercy who were working in Dockhead at the time . Does Elizabeth
then continue living with her brother Stephen somewhere?: from the 10/8/1892 Workhouse entry it would appear that Stephen had vanished! Electoral Roll
books exist for Hanover Buildings 1891-2 but no number 2!
1898 . Aged 34, no occupation given, marries Compton Alexander Amos,
36, warehouseman, on 10/04/1898 in St. John's Church, Battersea .Protestant
ceremony! Living at 107, Maysoule Road, Battersea. Her father Stephen Lyons
,deceased , labourer: his, John Peek Amos , deceased, engineer. Witnesses William
Cheyney & Harriet Amos.Have m.c. M10.

1901C. Living at 154, Maysoule Road, Battersea.

There were no children , confirmed by the 1911C.
1910. She and husband are godparents to nephew's, William's, firstborn Hilda Lyons . This in a catholic church and William a strong catholic!
1911C. Aged 42![ real age 47] , with Compton, aged 45, wool warehouse foreman, in 4 rooms at 5 Hope Street, Battersea, Wandsworth. Married 15 years, no children, dead or alive. So her husband has a reasonable job, in comparison to her brothers Michael & Stephen. .
1918. Husband Compton A. Amos dies, aged 52 in Wandsworth, 'Mar' 1918.
No will. This d.c would tell me where she was living then. Elizabeth does not
seem to remarry 1918-1938.
1925. Great nephew christened Dennis Compton Lyons. Elizabeth still alive then .
She is probably in the 1934 photo of the wedding of Eva Lyons to Harry Payne.
1940. She dies in St. Olaves Hospital, Bermondsey , aged 76, of 10 Rouel Road SE16, widow of Compton Alexander Amos, warehouse foreman, on 6/10/1940. Cause of death was Cardiorenal Sclerosis, informant was J.Lyons nephew, present at the death, of 19 Jamaica Road SE 16. DC 21. This J. Lyons would be the 1884 son of her brother Michael.

[This was obtained by her nephew Bill in 1971 when he was probing the Lyons family history]. She was buried, 10/10/1940, at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery Leytonstone: grave 28, row 62, plot 11,. the cost being £1.18.6d..
